“So Kaiden, could you describe Torin for me?”
Kaiden looked around the room from the couch in her Shrink’s office. She had been there for about an hour now. She looked at the colourless walls, and the plain silver clock. She begged those minutes to go by faster. The office’s blinds were always shut, the carpet too big for the floor so it bunched up in places.
“Kaiden pay attention please”
She snapped back.
“Oh, uh, sorry.. What was the question?” she asked quietly.
“What does Torin look like?” he repeated.
She hated describing him; actually she wasn’t fond of him altogether. He made her lose her friends, forget things, and get into a lot of trouble.
“Uh, well.. He’s darker, has long hair, and is quite tall.” She said.
“I see, and does h..”
The shrink was cut off by Kaiden jumping up and shouting
“TIMES UP!”
And she ran out the door.

She breathed in a huge lung-full of fresh air, and slowly let it out. Her runners hit the pavement hard. She walked home quickly just in case, she didn’t want Torin showing up while she was out. She walked in the door, and a rush of warm air swept across her face. She hadn’t realized how cold she was.

Kaiden plopped down on the couch, just barely missing the cat curled up on it. The door swung open, she sat up and looked over at it. Torin came stalking in, his heavy footsteps giving him away quickly. She clutched her head and screamed
“TORIN, GO AWAY!”
He looked at her with his huge brown eyes, his thick matted hair hanging in them. He started walking towards her. She opened her eyes and he was gone. Her mom came rushing in,
“Kaiden, why were you yelling? Are you alright?”
Kaiden looked up at her mom, she knew her mom knew what had happened but if she said she was fine, her mother would be alright with living in denial.
“I’m fine, just a bad dream. Haha.” She said
“Oh, I see.. Alright.” Her mom replied.

Kaiden started thinking about what last happened with her friends. When they had found out that she was… a freak. She closed her eyes and focused on the expression on her best friend’s face. He looked sympathetic but he also looked like he wanted to run away. His eyebrows furrowed as he tried to comprehend what he had just been told. She remembered how her breath had caught in her chest. She loved him, and now he had the look although he wanted to run away. She looked at him one last time, the way his dark hair felling into his eyes. And then she told him he could leave; she’d call him later. Those were the last words she had said to him, she gave him a huge hug, not a see you later hug, a goodbye hug. She breathed in his cologne, felt his heart beat, and let go. She opened her eyes, she was crying again. She had picked up the phone now, ready to dial.
“Hello?” said the voice on the other end.

She breathed hard. She couldn’t talk to him yet.

That night was the worst sleep she had ever had. Dreams of her friends calling her a freak haunted her all through the next day.
“Oh no,” she thought to herself, there he was. Practically running towards her.
“KAIDEN!”
She tried to look away, make it seem like she hadn’t seen him. He grabbed her shoulder, the jig was up.
“Kaiden,” he said in a relieved tone.
“I didn’t think I’d be able to catch up to you.” He said, looking at her intently.
“Look, I have to catch the bus…” She said trying to avoid talking too much.
“Oh.. Don’t you usually walk? C’mon I’ll walk with you.” He said.
“But I…” she started, but he cut her off
“Please.”

As they walked, she described what was going on, she described how she couldn’t even tell when that thing came out of her. He looked at her, his eyebrows furrowing again.
“So, you can’t even tell when your personality switches?” he questioned.
“No, usually it happens when I think I’m sleeping.” She sighed.
“So you’re not really sleeping? They must have something they can do…” he said suggestively.
“Yeah, but they have to diagnose what’s causing it first, because I haven’t had it my whole life.” She replied, looking at some grass.

“You never make eye contact anymore, do you?” he pushed.
“Well hell, would you if you were a freak like me?!” she shouted.
He put his hand on hers,
“You’re not a freak, Kaiden.”
